Two Malvern Baseball Players Sign National Letters of Intent
November 17, 2009

Two Malvern Prep baseball players have signed national letters of intent to continue their careers in college. Joe Giacchino will play baseball for the University of Delaware, and Tyler Young will play baseball for the University of Louisville.

Joe Giacchino – University of Delaware

Joe Giacchino, son of Larry and Lynn Giacchino, will continue his baseball career at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. Giacchino is a three-year varsity outfielder for the Friars, who helped Malvern to the Pennsylvania Independent School State Championship in 2009. Giacchino has also been a standout performer throughout his high school career for the All-Star Baseball Academy and the Boston Red Sox-affiliated Mid-Atlantic Red Sox team based in Baltimore. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Friar Nation spirit club and the Knights of Augustine new student orientation club at Malvern and plays CYO basketball.

Tyler Young – University of Louisville

Tyler Young, son of Dean and Kathy Young, will continue his baseball career at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. Young is a four-year varsity starter at shortstop and also served as the Friars’ closer. He was a First-Team All-Inter-Ac, All-Main Line and All-Area selection as a sophomore and junior, and received All-Southeastern PA honors as a junior. He helped Malvern to the Pennsylvania Independent School State Championship two out of the last three years, and in 2008, he was an integral part of the Malvern team that went 40-3 and ended the season ranked eighth in the nation by Baseball America. Young holds the school record in runs scored with 112 and holds a lifetime batting average of .394, and last season, hit .444 with four home runs, 23 RBI and 53 runs scored. On the mound last season, Young gave up one earned run in 17 innings pitched and recorded five saves and 18 strikeouts. He is also a member of the Malvern indoor track team.
